Mishra designed the first postgraduate course in ecology in India. More than 50 scholars received PhDs under his supervision and went on to found other universities and research institutions across the country to introduce ecological teaching and research. He was awarded fellowships from the Indian National Science Academy and the World Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the prestigious Sanjay Gandhi Award in Environment and Ecology.
Due to his efforts, the Government of India established the National Committee for Environmental Planning and Coordination (1972), which in later years paved the way for the establishment of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (1984).
